Tic or Habit?
Hi everyone

I desperating need some advice.

My poor 7 year old daughter has been making noises for the past 9 months.

First of all it started with her clearing her throat and sniffing, lasted for a couple of months then stopped.

For the past 6 months plus so has gone through numerous noises including tutting, sniffing, coughing, growling, clucking, and sort of holding her breath then letting it out. Sometimes it can be every couple of seconds, varies with tideness. She seems to be able to suppress them but will eventually let a noise out. School knows and even the Head said in assembly can the child making the noises please stop! I have told teachers so took it for granted the Head knew. He does now.

We have seen doctor 3 times and finally got a referral to Paedeatrics. At the appointment she managed to suppress the noises for the whole of the appointment! Consultant says she thinks it's a habit and not a Tic as she can stop it. She told us to award her when she stops etc which did work for a couple of weeks, her noises with minimal. For the last 2 weeks she has been terrible. It's like she cannot relax and it is worrying the family sick. Only a couple of nights ago she sobbed saying she wished she didn't have her noises and was even scared to brush her teeth as she said she felt like she had a lump in her throat.

I don't know what the best thing to do is?? I ask her if anything is worrying her. I try and calm her down and say she will get a treat if she does well with her noises. I'm not sure that's the best to do as I've read we should ignore it which we have tried also.

Every time she makes a noise it's like a dagger through my heart and I feel so sorry for her.

Sorry for the long post!!!

Any advice would be great. X

Our son did just this and all so pulled faces and stuttered it went on for quite a few years it seemed to be when he was stressed about school ect it did come and go but got much worse when he was 11and doing his sats.
I remember him pleading  with me to make it stop.we did see doctors about it but they didn't have much to say.
he is 14 today and it has settled down apart from a couple of weeks ago this tics came back the face pulling just for a couple of days.
I do hope things will get easier for your daughter ,I know my answer probably is of no help to you but by telling you about my son may make you feel less alone.

It certainly does. Did you ever get a diaognosis?
I'm not sure if we should tell her to try and stop or ignore it?

No the doctors never really said much but we didn't take him to see anyone for a long time ,then things seemed to calm down and we didn't go for any more appointments as we felt that it might draw attention to it again
We on the whole tried to play it down and not draw attention to it which we found helped.
When he started  doing again a couple of weeks a go we had a chat about it and it didn't go on for long.
He said it feels like you you want to sneeze but the more you try to stop it the harder it is then it just has to come out ,

not a medical professional but my understanding is that tics in children of this age usually resolve themselves and don't result in a diagnosis of Tourettes. I think it is rare for Tourettes to be diagnosed before the early teens.

It sounds like it is probably anxiety-related, might it help to try to work on what the underlying anxiety might be?

Thanks for your messages. I'm aware it could be anxiety related. We also have a very demanding 9 year old which I think she picks up on too.
