After I started the thead I thought no I'm not spending another £20 on an outfit for school that she will probably only wear once so I cancelled the order and she can go as rapunzel lol I'll just buy some wool and make a plate! meanie mummy lol she's got a massive dressing up box full of outfits lol

last year my son went as harry potter and this year he wants to wear his darth vader costume, but I was going to buy him a pirate outfit. Is a pirate outfit ok to wear for world book day?  Considering he will have to wear it all day I just want him to feel comfortable.

My son's been learning about skeletons at school and reading funny bones books so he's going as a skeleton.  We already have a skeleton Halloween costume x

I've made my lb a hungry caterpillar costume. He's in reception. Quite proud of myself as have never so much as sewed on a button and have produced a costume!

Our school just says 'fancy dress' so my son is going as Iron Man and fortunately we already have that outfit.

Not sure what classes as 'traditional'. Has your lg got a princess dress already you could dress up as rapunzel, sleeping beauty?

I asked my children what they wanted to be. My DD said Alice in Wonderland, my 8 year old DS said he wanted to be a giant bunny rabbit with big floppy ears and a big bushy tail just like Peter Rabbit I've got my DD an Alice costume off ebay and wasn't sure if DS would get made fun of as a giant floppy eared rabbit so persuaded him to be the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland again from eBay and he's very happy to be his sister's rabbit. if you want a free outfit for a girl you could do Alice with a school summer dress, school socks or tights and shoes with a hair band.

Our schools (infant and junior) are not dressing up for it this time - I'm a bit disappointed because my son was going to be an alien from Aliens love underpants, dressed all in green with face painted big eye on his head, and pants over his trousers.

Last year DD1 was The Cat in the Hat, the only expense was the hat, the rest was just black clothes and face paint. DD2's junior school had Roald Dahl dress up day instead. She went as Roald Dahl, WW2 fighter pilot (from the book Going Solo). She had on her leather jacket with paper RAF badges stuck on, and a soft astronaut helmet from the dressing up box turned inside out with paper goggles stuck on the forehead to look like a flying helmet. She was the only one, most were Willy Wonka or an oompa loompa or Mr Fox.

I'm not a fan of spending money on costumes for school dress-up events, usually we have either got a suitable costume or we can make something/use existing clothes to do it.

Our school had pirate day once, it was great. Loads of people wore 'proper' outfits they already had or had bought, but you can just as easily be a pirate with a stripy shirt and a bandana.

I loath book snobbery...if it's in a book then it's eligible for world book day..surely the idea is to encourage a lifelong love of reading?

Our eldest went as Jessie from Toy Story one year with the accompanying book as insurance

My son is avengers crazy and has story books for each character so he'll be going as one of them. He does have other more "articulate" books but they're his favourite so who am I to tell him no lol
