Took my little boy for an eye test and I was told he was slightly short sighted. I was told that his eyes could correct themselves by the time he is 8 if he wears his glasses for school and watching tv. Does anybody have any experience of this

The visual system within the brain stops developing at the age of eight but that's not to say he won't need glasses. That depends on his growth. He needs to wear his glasses til that age to ensure no permanent defect of vision but he may still need glasses. If he is short sighted then the likelihood with the nature of the growth of the eye is that he will become more short sighted as he gets older. It's really important he wears the glasses now though (doesn't affect long term outcome of prescription) as if he doesn't, the brain cells won't develop fully and then once that system has stopped developing it will be too late to achieve a normal level of vision even with glasses.

My son had his eye test at school and he was long sighted so got referred to the hospital.

When we went he said his eyes are weak so to wear glasses and his eyes could improve in time.
The next appointment, the one eye had improved quite abit and the other slightly.

I have another appointment later this month.

They said it either streghens the glasses so won't always end up needed them in the end or it will, depends on if if it stregthens and helps.

I was about 7 I think when I fisrt needed glasses for short sightedness, just things like tv or seeing the blackboard at school. However I Hated wearing them and being stubborn I simply didn't, my eyes got worse and worse and now as an adult my prescription is almost -7, which is pretty strong or so I was told when I last got my eyes checked. Every time I have a check up I need stronger prescriptions and pay to have the lenses thinned out as they are so thick, and my vision is extremely blurred without them. I'm also allergic to contact lenses.

I don't know if my sight would have got worse anyway but I don't think refusing to wear them for about 5 years helped (until I almost got hit by a car as I didn't see it which scared me into wearing them, and my school work suffered too). so my point is make sure he wears them it's so important, ,my husband also has glasses since childhood, and wore them when he was meant to, his eyes didn't improve but didn't get worse either and I think he's only a -1.5. I wish I hadn't been so silly as a child!

It can change but not necessarily. DH had glasses as a child for 2 years and then again since he is 37.

DD had eyetest since she started primary school and last year, she was nearly 7,  she was diagnosed with being short-sighted but with just -0.5 we were advised against glasses. She is now at -1.0 and wears glasses since February. Coming from a family where virtually all of us have glasses it was fairly certain she would get some.

I wear glasses since I am 11 and have now -7.5 and blind without them. For me, I see them as part of me and while it can be a pain in the a... it is just how it is.
