Hi everyone, guess I'm just looking for some reassurance. Have spoken to my health visitor twice before and my GP. My son is 18 months old and have always noticed his head is a little flat at the back on one side. Both health visitor and GP agreed but said it is not bad and will not affect his development. He has curls and even his curls are now flat. I am a worrier but I'm working myself up about it. My partner says it's not bad and he will ' fill out ' as time goes on.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Will he really grow into his head so to speak? It's all I'm seeing when I look at him and feel so upset. It's probably just me worrying as usual!
Thanks in advance x

this normaly happens when babies spend too much time on their backs. try putting him on his front as much as you can or his side to sleep etc but in most cases it does go back to 'normal' xx

Thanks, I understand this but being 18 months old now he tends to find his own sleeping position. He usually sleeps on his tummy now and I'm worried his head will now stay this way. I know I'm over reacting need to stop worrying and feeling it. It's probably me making it flat! x

have you ever taken him for a cranial!?

he may be twisted somewhere, therefore only comfortable in certain positions.

my baby is nearly 4 months old and he has regular work on his head!
he kept going to the right all the time and has a bit of a wonky head [emoji38] cranials are helping him turn ti the left much easier! so it is slowly looking better.

it may take longer to sort due to age, but highly recommend it x

No, 2 different hv's and my own GP have said it's not a problem! They say nobody's head is a perfect round shape and his being slightly flat at one side will not affect him in any way. No one else sees it, it's not really noticeable,  think because I know it's there I'm constantly looking.

so if your upset about it then take him for a cranial , they can help sort it.
its not a problem for him , but if you are worried about then get it looked at, x

Hi my little boy is 2 years 3 months and still has a flat head on one side Iv spoke to doctor and health visitor and have been reassured that it's nothing to worry about its just from when he used to lie on that side as a baby, and should go by time he's 4 or 5  am guessing when his head grows, he is fine and meeting all his milestones. So wouldn't worry 😊 xx

Just seen a different doctor for another opinion really. He agreed his head is slightly flat but nothing to worry about. He said it's more a cosmetic issue and as he grows his head will grow and maybe round out. No guarantee though. He did say if it had been picked up earlier something could have been done. I feel angry now... I first told HV when he was around 3-4 months old 😕

He has no neck problems ect and is healthy. His head has a slightly flat bit at the back on the right. Would a cranial oestepath be able to help? Am waiting for a call back from them. What would they do and would it improve?

Just wanted to update, have seen a cranial oestepath. She assured me that ds's head shape is not a problem and not affecting him or his neck at all. She described it as when a filled balloon is pushed somewhere it needs to bulge somewhere else. My ds's head is slightly flat back right and the lump or bulge back left. She said that often the flat spot can make the forehead protude or ears and eyes mis aligned. Not the case for ds.
She said that his head was always going to be this shape as he was so big born and would have been head down sooner than smaller babies. I'm only petite and she said his had was probably pushed up against my pelvic bone. She said that very often and she expects is the case that head shape improves over years but would never be perfectly round. She wants to see ds again around 6-7 years just to recheck neck muscles.
Now just to stop being a paranoid mummy and stop worrying which is another matter! .......

My son who is 5 months also has a slight flat head but he can turn his head both ways so there is nothing wrong with his neck muscles. Health visitor is going to access him again at 10 months so I'll be asking her for her opinion on it then but my doctor said it will sort it self out. I do always try different positions so his not laid the same all the time but it can be quite difficult when they seem to favour one. I didn't ever think it could be down to his positioning when pregnant though but that could make some sense as he has a red mark on his forehead which I was told is from he being laid against my pelvis and should fade. You can get helmets for them so it keeps pressure of that part of there head and when they have growth spurts it is meant to repair itself but these are pricey as they put it down to cosmetic. As parents though I think we always worry about our children, part of the role!

HI Emma,

My DS is 18 months old, turning 19 in a few days and has a flat head as well. The osteopath told us there's nothing that can be done but he found out that DS has a tightness in the back of the neck and said it could be what caused him to sleep on the side which gave the flat head.

I know it's been long but I would be great if you could give us an update if you see this message.

Many thanks.
