Hi

I've just taken Rowan to baby clinic for his 9 month old deveopment check and HV referred me to see the GP as she measured Rowan's head cicumference and it was 44cm and on the 2nd centile.

He now weights 18lb 9oz and has lost a little weight and on 25th centile (He has never been on the 50th for his weight, but it not undeweight).  HV said it's probably because he started crawling last week and just doesn't stop moving.

I have just checked Rowan's notes and in August (when he was 2 months old) his head measured 40 cm and was on the 50th centile.

GP told me that I shouldn't worry too much as Rowan is crawling, babbling and saying 'da da' and 'ma ma' and can sit up on his own (something he has been doing since 5 months old).   GP told me he would phone the hospital just to check how often his head should be measured or to see if he needs to be seen by a specialist.

I can't help but feel really worried now.  GP said that he is doing a lot for his age, but it doesn't stop me from panicking :(.

Has anyone else's baby been low on the centile chart for head circumference?

Hi there..

My dd now 11 was always between the 2nd & 9th centile for head circumference. She is a very intelligent child!

I personally don't have a large head and often have to buy childrens hats. Her father also didn't have a large head either so why would my daughter?

I would try not to worry as your lo's development is coming along nicely and these centiles are just average guidelines not everyone fits perfectly on a chart.

As long as he is growing and developing then I know he'll he fine

Looking back in hindsight, I took Rowan on holiday a few weeks ago. I bought him a Sun hat from Mothercare and ended up buying one for 3-6 months (even though he was 8 months old) as the 6-9months was massive on him.

I took another hat with me and that was 0-3 months, admittedly it was a snug fit, but at the time I didn't think about it and just assumed that the hats were just too big for him , I didn't think that maybe his head was too small for his age!

My crazy HV has been barking on about head circumference for a bit since Oliver's head had dropped some centiles on the chart. In essence all it means is that you Lo is not growing like a uniformed robot exactly to a chart!!

Don't worry at all. By all means keep an eye on it and be conscious but honestly I am sure things will be ok. Oliver's head is still a bit flat at the back from when he was little and would only feed/sleep in one position! But he's happy and developing and is growing all the time so has plenty of time to get bigger

According to Max's charts he is out of proportion:lol:
He is on about the 68th percentile for height, the 15th-20th for weight, and just about the 9th percentile for his head circumference!

And last time his head circumference was on the 25th so he has dropped.

But, his head doesnt look small, and he has a big forehead bless him, and he too is crawling, babbling, and very active etc.

hello, i am just wondering if you guys think that the small head size could be related to plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) since my baby was diognosed with that.

I'm not sure about this, but Rowan did have a slightly flat head a few months back (he would always sleep on the left side of his head), but know it has all evened out.  The GP still hasn't got back to me, so I am assuming it's nothing to worry about.

Had a letter today and Rowan has an appointement to see a Paediatrician about his head on 11th May!  I am really worried now and would like to know if anyone else had to see a consultant about their babies' head circumference?  What does the Paediatrician do?

My little boy was referred to a paediatrician for having a little head when he was just a few weeks old.  They went so far as to do chromosone tests.  I was demented!  But he was fine.  Try not to worry, easy to say I know.

According to my usual HV, Rowan is fine.  He is babbling, crawling and now pulling himself up.  His hearing is good, as well as his eyesight and coordination.

He is not a big baby but on the other hand he just doesn't stop, he is always on the go and is very active.  I am so worried that the Paediatrician will say there is something wrong with him

Hi Rebecca, how old is Sophie?  What tests did the Paeadiatrican do?

Rowan eats like a horse !  He loves his food and is on 3 meals a day, plus snacks.  He is aound 19lbs and he does look smaller than other babies his age but he has no puppy fat on him as he burns everything off as he is always on the go.

Hi Rhu

I found your post while looking for information about small heads. My son is 13 months old - and has a head circumference that's on the 2nd percentile. We went to see the pediatrician this week who has referred him for x-rays. Just wanted to know how things are going with Rowan, as you seem to have been in the same position that we are now. My son is very tall (91st percentile) and is on the 50th for weight. So worried! Does anyone else have any information about this?

Thanks very much.
