All I know that thanks to Brexit, it is now no longer possible to have an au pair from EU. It should still be possible to have an au pair from outside EU but unsure if the cost is not too high for them so fewer girls do it. An EU au pair did not need visa, travelled for cheap and wasn't actually that far for her family either.

One more reason against Brexit nobody thought about! :)

Yes! They are! My daughter has been au pair to a family for the last 9 months.

Yes absolutely an au pair could be an option alongside nursery and then the au pair would have time to study which is the usual arrangement.

Bear in mind:

-as au pairs are unqualified and unregistered you’ll need to pay them out of your own money- childcare hours/ tax credits won’t be able to be used to pay them

-visas are more difficult since Brexit so it may be easier to look for a UK resident rather than an au pair from abroad which used to be the norm

good luck!

I don't know if au pairs are as popular an option as in previous decades but some parents do definitely still employ them. We know a family from same school that has used one the last few years as their jobs have non-standard hours, are away for periods at a time and traditional 8-6pm etc childcare does not work for them.

It's usually been a university student who is employed and she has used some spare time to compliment or finish her studies. Italians are the norm and it seems to be a longer term set-up. HTH.
