I’m 19 weeks pregnant and can only control my IBS-D with Imodium/loperamide.

Ive been having a constant flare up for 4 weeks now. My dr had been zero help and said not to take it in pregnancy but given no alternatives.

My issue is if I don’t take it I get really poorly because my stomach won’t stop so I’ve had to take the lowest dose on days I go to work (I work 7am-8pm 3 days a week) but I feel so guilty and worried every time.

I already had 9 weeks off work with severe morning sickness at the beginning of pregnancy and can’t afford to not work but my only other option is becoming housebound for the rest of my pregnancy if I can’t have medication.

Has anyone taken it regularly through pregnancy and everything been fine?

I feel like I can’t be the only person in the world that has had this issue. I only wish I was someone who’s IBS got better in pregnancy.

Hi, it's Sarah, one of the Netmums midwives. Firstly that sounds really tough, it's hard enough being pregnant without having bad IBS bouts on top. When you say you've spoken to your doctor do you mean your GP or an obstetrician? If it's your GP I think it would be worth asking your community midwife for advise, and / or a referral to an obstetrician. If you are under the care of a gastro doctor for your IBS it would also be worth seeking their input. As you said, you can't be the only woman whose IBS has worsened during pregnancy. In the meantime, good luck - and let us know how you get on. Oh and don't forget to stay hydrated if you can - your body needs a lot more fluid than normal when you're pregnant.

Best wishes

Midwife Sarah
