Find out if it's safe to eat saveloy during pregnancy, plus precautions to take to keep you and your baby healthy.

The official advice on eating saveloy in pregnancy

It's OK to eat saveloy when you're pregnant, just make sure it's thoroughly cooked first.

Whether you're having saveloy at a takeaway or buying from your supermarket deli counter, always make sure the meat has been properly cooked before you eat it, with no trace of pink or blood.

According to the NHS, raw or uncooked meat can contain harmful parasites which cause toxoplasmosis. This can make your unborn baby very unwell and lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, so always make sure that it's fully cooked.

You may be more vulnerable to food poisoning when you're pregnant, so be cautious about hygiene when getting saveloy from your local fish and chip shop. Look out for a Food Standards Agency certificate. This will usually be displayed in the shop window or on the van. A food hygiene rating of 4 or 5 means that the shop's standards were good or very good at the last inspection.
