Make this basic easy Cinderella costume for World Book Day – with no cutting or sewing required! You can make it more princessy by adding sparkles!

Every girl knows the classic Cinderella fairy tale – and it's a popular costume choice for girls on World Book Day!

Cinderella lives with her evil stepmother and two ugly stepsisters who all bully her and get her to do all the housework. She isn't invited to the prince's ball, but she gets to go anyway when her fairy godmother turns up and turns a pumpkin into a carriage and magics up a beautiful ballgown – yup, that's the one you'll be making for your little girl to dress up in for World Book Day 2023!

Alas, Cinderella forgets that her fairy godmother told her the magic will only last until midnight, after which the pumpkin will turn back and she'll change back into her old rags ... so after dancing all night with the prince she has to run away as the clock begins to strike midnight so that he doesn't see who she really is and fall out of love with her.

Luckily she loses one of her glass slippers and so the prince has something to find her with. He declares that whichever girl in the kingdom has a foot that fits the glass slipper will become his wife and live happily ever after with him in his fancy castle ...

Spoiler alert – it ends up being Cinderella, of course! Which is why it's such a popular costume for little girls who want to become princesses. Plus, they get to wear a ballgown. Here's how to make one ...

You'll need:

  • A blue vest or sleeveless top
  • A blue skirt
  • A long white t-shirt
  • Blue ribbon
  • Stick-on sparkles to decorate
  • White gloves (optional)

Three easy steps

1. For a cheat's Cinderella dress, your child can wear a short-sleeved blue vest top over a long white-t-shirt, all on top of a blue skirt. If necessary, pin the hem of the blue top up and under so that the white t-shirt hangs down underneath.

2. Add stick-on sparkles to the skirt and top (optional) – but we think it adds that bit of fairy godmother magic to the ballgown!

3. Add the white gloves and tie your child's hair up in a bun using the ribbon as a hairband.

Complete the Cinderella look with some extra details if you like ...

  • A symbolic pumpkin for your kid to hold
  • One bare-foot to show that she lost one of her slippers (she can wear a nude stocking with a flip flop inside to protect her foot!)
  • Any cute teddies your kid has of mice or birds – because Cinderella was friends with all the animals!
