This easy Tinkerbell costume, with its leafy skirt, will make your child the envy of Pixie Hollow! Find out how to make it for World Book Day 2023!

Everybody loves sweet and sassy Tinkerbell from Peter Pan! She's a popular pixie character for little girls to dress up as for World Book Day 2023, and we have an easy Tinkerbell costume for you to make.

Before we dive into the costume instruction, here's a bit of Tinkerbell trivia for you ...

  • Tinkerbell first appeared in the 1904 play, “Peter Pan: or,The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” by Sir James M. Barrie
  • She was named 'Tinker Bell' because she was a fairy who fixed pots and kettles, just like a tinsmith or tinker! In the original play, she communicated with a tinkling bell sound. (Although her name was originally spelled as two words, the one-word version is much more popular these days)
  • Tinkerbell was an original member of the Disney Princesses. However, it was decided that she was so special she should have a group of her own – the Disney Fairies! She is joined by Silvermist, Rosetta, Fawn, and Iridessa.

You'll need:

  • Skin-toned leotard or swimming costume
  • Green vest top
  • Elastic for a waistband
  • Hemming tape
  • Fairy wings
  • 1-2m of green material or 8-10 squares of green felt

4 easy steps

1. Sew or stick (with hemming tape and a hot iron) the green vest top to the leotard or swimming costume, cutting off the straps, or tucking them inside so they can't be seen. (For an even quicker and easier version, simply wear a green vest top and flesh-coloured tights or leggings.)

2. Measure your child's waist with the elastic, then add 10cm to this measurement and cut to size, using the extra to tie it in a knot.

3. Cut the green material or felt squares into leaf shapes, arrange them around the waistband with the tops folded over hiding the elastic, and stick or sew into position.

4. Add fairy wings and pull your child's hair up into a top knot.

Fun extras:

  • Add a wand, every fairy needs one!
  • Add a pouch of 'Pixie Dust' - a transparent bag full of biodegradable glitter attached to the skirt will do nicely, but make sure it's sealed if you don't want your kid throwing glitter at everyone!
  • Give your child a tiny bell so they can communicate with a tinkle – a little bell from a cat collar will do nicely, and you can tie it to your child's wrist with some ribbon or elastic.
